Student procedures for raising concerns and complaints 

UMSON is committed to upholding UMB Core Values and encourages students to share concerns. To communicate the information to the appropriate person in a timely manner, students should follow the outlined steps according to the nature of the complaint. If unsure of the nature of their concerns, students are welcome to raise issues with their assigned academic advisor, the Associate Dean of Student and Academic Services, or the Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion who will assist students on appropriate next steps.  

For complaints regarding title IX/sexual misconduct, bias, discrimination, ADA accommodations, and other policy violations: 

  • Students should make a report to the UMB hotline for investigation by the UMB Office of Accountability and Compliance. 

For instructor-related concerns (assignments, exams, feedback, grading, etc.): 

  • Students should discuss their concern with the Course Faculty;
  • If unable to be resolved, next discuss with Course Director;
  • Next step would be to discuss with the Department Chair. (Ask your course faculty or course director the name of the relevant department chair.) 

For program-related concerns (degree requirements, plan of study, scheduling, quality or sequencing of coursework, etc.): 

  • Students should discuss their concern with their Program Director or Specialty Director;
  • If unable to be resolved, next discuss with the program’s Associate Dean.
  • Final step would be to discuss with the Dean of the School of Nursing.

For concerns about specific personnel or departments: 

  • Students should try to resolve their concerns directly with the individual;
  • If unable to be resolved, next step would be the person’s supervisor or unit director/administrator. (The school’s website lists a directory of academic departments and administrative offices.) 

For concerns that another student has violated the Code of Conduct: 

  • Students should report the allegation to the Associate Dean of Student and Academic Services/Chair of Judicial Boards. 

For concerns not addressed elsewhere: 

  • Students should submit concerns using the Complaints form below; 
  • The form is reviewed by the Associate Dean for Student and Academic Services and handled according to the nature of the issue.
