Institute for Clinical and Translation Research (ICTR) Grants
The Accelerated Translational Incubator Pilot (ATIP) grant provides starter funds for projects specifically focused on innovative, translational research that involves:
- faculty from the UMB Schools of Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, or Social Work
AND - UMB/University of Maryland Baltimore County or UMB/Baltimore community partnerships.
The Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program Collaborative Innovation Awards are funds that are available to UMB as a “CTSA program hub,” meaning our research and successful alliance with Johns Hopkins University and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) allows UMB researchers access to additional NIH funding opportunities.

ICTR Studios Consult Services
Multidisciplinary experts provide free, structured feedback for researchers on their individual projects. Studio members have expertise in hypothesis generation, study design, biostatistics, implementation, analysis and interpretation, participant recruitment, and research ethics. Once a studio application is completed, a manager reviews the request and brings 3 - 6 experts to the table to advise the researcher in a 90-minute session. To apply for this support through ICTR, use the ICTR Core Service Request. Note that you must be prepared to use the resource at the time of the request.
ICTR Voucher Program
Up to $10,000 in voucher support is available per applicant, also called the “micro-grant” program. Helps defray cost of other fee-for-service UMB Cores. Applications are reviewed every 3 months. All assistant professors, associate professors, and professors with a minimum of 51% FTE appointment are eligible.
MPower Grants
MPower promotes cross-institutional as well as cross-disciplinary research by combining the expertise of UMB and University of Maryland College Park researchers and students. The grants offered by MPower are called Seed Grants.
Pre-Award Budget/Submission Support
The Office of Administrative Services and Office of Research and Scholarship offer assistance preparing budgets as well as developing subcontracts. They also offer support during the final stage of submission by preparing and organizing final grant documents.

Research Center Grants
UMSON’s Organized Research Centers receive funds from multiple sources to support the research efforts of their members that relate to the centers’ missions.
- Biology and Behavior Across the Life Span (BBAL) promotes research related to investigations of disease management, optimization of health, and biological influences in disease prevalence and progression.
- Center for Health Equity and Outcomes Research aims to improve health outcomes and eliminate health inequities.
- Center to Advance Chronic Pain Research (CACPR) focuses on the physiological, genetic, and psychosocial underpinnings of the development and persistence of debilitating chronic pain conditions.

Research Quality Assurance/Institutional Review Board Support
The Office of Research and Scholarship provides assistance with Quality Assurance and Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes. Services include but are not limited to; pre-IRB reviews, consultation and advice regarding regulatory and compliance issues, trainings, and education.

School of Medicine Grant Writing Workshops
The School of Medicine's Office of Research Career Development (RCD) offers grant writing courses that will provide the basis of writing a competitive R01 grant application. This is open to new/junior faculty who are actively working on a grant application. The course meets for 2 hours on a weekly basis.

Statistical Support
UMSON Statisticians will support UMSON faculty and students pre award by working alongside them to produce proposals and post award by assisting with data analyses and interpretation.

UMNursing Grants
Internal grants are available for scholars who are looking to partner with a University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) nurse to research nurse-sensitive outcomes in the hospital or community. Awards can amount to $15,000 per year.
