General Research, Teaching, and Community-Based Innovation

Purpose
The intent of these innovation grants is to support faculty to complete small innovative pilot grants to be used to build future fundable studies. These innovative ideas can focus on research in general (e.g., behavior change, long-term care, acute care interventions, maternity, pediatrics, adult health, geriatrics, omics, oncology, etc.), educational research (e.g., student education in alternative settings of care such as long-term care or senior housing, innovative teaching and learning approaches including use of simulation, etc.), or community-based research or evaluation projects (innovative ways to engage the community in a behavior change intervention; innovative approaches to addressing school health, housing, and homelessness in urban and rural settings; cost savings evaluation of existing UMB programs, etc.).
Innovation Grant Eligibility
- Focus on innovative interventions or exploratory research
- Are feasible to accomplish within 24 months
- Must include at least two nursing faculty (a principal investigator and co-investigator or a multiple principal investigator approach); we particularly encourage senior investigators or investigators with research experience to reach out to and include new or junior faculty interested in engaging in research but who may not have served as a principal investigator or co-investigator formally on a study
Funding Information
- Estimated individual award budget is limited to $10,000 (total budget).
- This budget includes direct costs only and will not cover faculty time.
- Duration is two years (24 months).
- We anticipate funding a maximum of 10 awards for $10,000 each across the three areas.
- Funding should be used for staff to support the project and resources needed, such as incentives, statistical programs, and publications. The funds will not cover travel or conference costs.
Applications
Due June 30, 2025, 8 p.m. ET
Applications will be limited to 4 pages.
The 4-page application (1 page specific aims, 3 pages proposal) must include:
- Title of proposed activity
- Specific aims (overall goals of the research or project) – 1 page
- Background/evidence gap/significance – 1 page
- Study design/method (include recruitment, intervention, measures, data analysis) – 2 pages
Appendix should include the following attachments beyond the 4-page limit:
- Timeline
- Measures/intervention materials (as relevant)
- References
- Budget

Review and Selection Process
Applications will be evaluated on their scientific and technical merit by an identified review committee.
The following criteria will be considered in the reviews:
- alignment of the proposed project to the purpose of these innovation grants
- importance, significance, and relevance of project to the current clinical, teaching, and community environments
- design appropriateness
- feasibility of a two-year timeline to completion
- likelihood project will lead to successful future funding
- special consideration for those new to research.
