Current Student Registration Information and Procedures

All Degree Programs:

If you have not done so already, please meet with your advisor prior to registering for courses and check Degree Works for degree progression. If you have a registration hold, it must be cleared through the office listed on the hold.

Non-degree students do not have audits in Degree Works.

Program-Specific Information:

RN-to-BSN and RN-to-MS/MSN

  • The School of Nursing has two focus areas for RN-to-BSN: Care Coordination with Health IT and Substance Use and Addictions. Please see the RN-to-BSN Focus Areas webpage for more information.
  • All students intending to enroll in NURS 467 must enroll by the clinical, practicum, and project courses registration deadline.
  • UMSON uses STEPS, a clinical placement and tracking software, for clinical placements. More details will be disseminated soon to RN-to-BSN/MSN students about this software, including training information.
  • Electives: Beginning fall 2022 electives are listed under the NELC subject code.

Entry-Level BSN

  • All students must enroll for clinical/practica/project courses by the clinical, practicum, and project courses registration deadline.
  • STEPS is our software system for assigning and tracking clinical placements. UMSON uses STEPS, a clinical placement and tracking software, for clinical placements. All students are highly encouraged to attend a Clinical Information Session. This session will be recorded and posted for viewing for students who cannot attend.
  • Electives: Beginning fall 2022 electives are listed under the NELC subject code.
  • BSN Curriculum Changes: Traditional BSN Curriculum Change goes into effect fall 2022. Any current traditional BSN student should refer to the following schedule for the last semester in which a course will be offered..

If you cannot complete the following courses by the last semester offered, you will move into the new curriculum.
This may require you to take more than one course to meet the old course requirement.

  • Should a student not successfully complete a course in the last semester offered, contact your advisor in the Office of Academic and Career Success.
  • Should a student not complete NURS 329 (Psych) by Fall 2022, the next opportunity to take it will be Fall 2023

     

Master's CNL

Master’s Community Public Health, HSLM, Nursing Informatics

DNP

  •  DNP students registering for a practicum course must register by the clinical, practicum, and project courses registration deadline.

 

PhD

  • PhD students are encouraged to meet with their advisors as soon as possible to plan out their summer/fall courses of study.

Coursework Only

  • Please see the academic calendar for CWO registration dates. If you have a registration hold, it must be cleared through the office listed on the hold.

Class Schedule

The class schedule listing all sections eligible for registration is available. Please note the schedule will continue to update throughout the registration period. 

  • The School of Nursing reserves the right to change the class schedule at any time.
  • Clinical sections and practica assignments may change at any time.
  • While every effort is made to not cancel sections, in the unlikely event of this happening, students will be notified and will receive a full tuition refund for the canceled course.

A list of electives for undergraduates can be found here. Please check the class schedule to determine which electives are scheduled for the relevant term.

Advising

Your advisor is listed on your degree worksheet in Degree Works (top right of your worksheet next to “Advisor”). Contact information for advisors is available in the UMSON online Directory. If an advisor is not listed, your advisor will be assigned at New Student Orientation. 

Student Handbook

Students are responsible for knowing and following the policies and procedures in Student Handbook.

Academic Calendar

The Academic Calendar lists all relevant term dates and deadlines. All students are expected to review and be familiar with the calendar dates.

University Email

All correspondence regarding students’ academic record and class information will be communicated via University email. Per the Student Handbook, students are required to use their University email accounts to communicate with faculty, administration, and staff at UMSON and UMB. Please be sure to use your “@umaryland.edu” email for any correspondence with us regarding your academic experience.

Continuous Enrollment Policy

All students at UMSON are required to maintain continuous enrollment, per the Student Handbook. (Also see the Student Handbook for enrollment requirements specific to your program.) Students who do not enroll will become inactive. Leave of Absence may only be requested prior to the start of the term. Should a student need to request a leave of absence, the form is available here.

Holds

Title IX Holds:

All students must complete the Title IX, each year.  Students who have a Title IX hold, please select the link to complete the training.  Once you completed the training, please allow 1-2 business days for hold removal.

Drug Abuse Prevention Hold:

All incoming students are required to receive opioid prevention education through House Bill 1082 Heroin and Opioid Education and Community Action Act of 2017 (Start Talking Maryland Act). As a part of this requirement, all new incoming and first-year students must complete the prescription drug abuse prevention course.  If you have not completed the training a hold will be placed on your record, preventing registration. To remove the hold, please select the link to complete the training.  Once you have completed the training, please allow 1-2 business day for your student record to update.

Missing Emergency Contact Hold:

All students must list an emergency contact in SURFS, no later than the 3rd week of your first semester in your program.  If you fail to do so, a hold will be placed on your student record preventing registration.  If you have this hold, please login to SURFS, and update your emergency contact (list at least one contact).  Once you have updated your record, please email the UMB Registrar office noting that you have updated your emergency contact.  Please allow 1-2 business days for the hold to be removed from your record.

Student Health Hold:

All students must comply with the mandates via student health/castle branch. If you have a student health hold, please contact Denise Mitchell at the Student Health Office. The student health office will remove holds, upon successful submission of all requested compliance documents.
