Teaching Excellence Awards

Purpose: 

The purpose of the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) Excellence in Teaching Award and Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award is to recognize excellence in the area of teaching at UMSON.

Each year, three awards are given:

  • one to an undergraduate faculty member (BSN level)
  • one to a graduate faculty member (master’s, post-master’s, certificates, DNP, or PhD program)
  • one to a clinical faculty member (adjunct faculty or faculty with full- or part-time appointments who provides clinical instruction to clinical groups in acute care and community settings)

Eligibility and Award Criteria

Excellence in Teaching Award

Eligibility Criteria:

  • UMSON faculty member with a full- or part-time faculty appointment (adjunct faculty are not eligible for this award)
  • Faculty member who has taught at UMSON for at least one year
  • Faculty member must teach in either the baccalaureate (BSN, RN-BSN) or graduate (master’s, post-master’s, certificate, DNP, or PhD) programs

Award Criteria:

The nominee will exhibit excellence in teaching consistent with the criteria listed below.

  • Leads in the promotion and implementation of innovative teaching/learning approaches in
    nursing education
  • Demonstrates excellence and innovation in teaching

Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Clinical faculty member who has taught at UMSON for at least one year
  • Clinical faculty teaching in either the baccalaureate (BSN) program or master’s
    entry-into-practice option

Award Criteria:

The nominee will exhibit excellence in teaching consistent with the criteria listed below.

  • Leads in the promotion and implementation of innovative teaching/learning approaches in nursing education
  • Exhibits the characteristics and behaviors of a strong role model
  • Demonstrates excellence and innovation in teaching/learning approaches
  • Promotes diversity and culture of inclusion

Nomination Process:

The eligible faculty member must be nominated by a student for the award. The nomination packet consists of the following components:

Student Nomination

  • A nomination is completed and submitted electronically by a student via the online form below.
  • Nominations must be written within one year prior to the due date.
  • Nominations must be submitted by the first Monday in March of each year.

Nominee Response

  • Nominees are notified of their nomination by the Faculty Council Student Affairs Committee.
  • Upon accepting the nomination, the nominee completes a Nominee Summary, which includes the nominee’s teaching experience, philosophy of teaching, proudest moment as a teacher, and recent contribution to or innovation in teaching.
  • The Nominee Summary is limited to 300 words and must be submitted to the chair of the Faculty Council Student Affairs Committee within two weeks of notification of the nomination.

Nominate a Faculty Member Now

All nominations must be submitted by the first Monday in March of the current year.

Selection Committees:

The Office of Student and Academic Services (OSAS) will recruit five student volunteers from the baccalaureate and graduate student bodies to serve as the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee will review nominee applications and select the awardees. The Selection Committees will include representatives from the Baltimore and Universities at Shady Grove locations.

Presentation of Awards:

Award winners will be announced at the end of the spring semester and will:

  • serve as student marshal for the UMSON Convocation and UMB Commencement
  • receive an engraved award
  • be featured in UMSON communications.

Standing Committee Responsible for Oversight:

Student Affairs with assistance from Office of Student and Academic Services
