At the end of the 2003-2004 school year, a group of Hispanic/Latino students got together to form a student organization that included both undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Since 2006, Nurses for Global Health, a student organization, has played an active role in promoting global health awareness and activities in the School of Nursing. The organization's mission is to strengthen the engagement of the University of Maryland and the global health community by building collaborations, creating networks, and becoming a resource center for global health opportunities in nursing. They serve as support to the School of Nursing's vision of creating a rich and vibrant working and learning environment, with a focus on expanding and sharing knowledge of global health issues. Monthly meetings, Cinema presentations and the Annual Global Health conference are offered to provide opportunities for interprofessional collaboration between students and faculty to participate in global health activities. All undergraduate students at the University of Maryland School of Nursing are members of the NSGA. The purpose of the NSGA is to encourage fellowship among students and to create a sense of unity, cooperation, and understanding between the faculty and students. NSGA is a unique setting wherein students can voice their opinions and have an influence on the School of Nursing. The NSGA seeks to enhance students' experiences by organizing activities and educational opportunities. SUPER, an UMSON Student Chapter of Academy Health is a student group whose members strive to educate ourselves and others on current health care research development and policy practices. Our parent organization, AcademyHealth, is a premier advocate for health services research and policy advancement. With their guidance, we host legislators and other policymakers from the local, state, and national levels, health services researchers, and those working within the system in non-governmental roles to share their experiences with the University of Maryland at Baltimore population. Our organization also participates in state healthcare advocacy events, such as Nurses' Advocacy in Annapolis, allowing us to apply what we have learned about health services policy. UMANS is the University of Maryland's Chapter of the National Student Nurses Organization. As the local chapter of the NSNA, we participate in the annual convention.
