- Mainstreaming of the Web in the 1990s came the misuse of HTML (HyperText Markup Language)
- Major standard at this time was to use the attribute border="0" to control the layout through invisible tables & transparent spacer GIFs
- HTML was not intended to control presentation through hacks, invisible code, proprietary elements and other attributes
- At this time CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) were not widely integrated or used
