Clinical Simulation Laboratories
The University of Maryland School of Nursing's Clinical Simulation Laboratories (CSL) are designed to simulate clinical settings, providing undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to learn and enhance their skills. This is accomplished through the use of clinical case scenarios, faculty guidance, and resources that facilitate clinical critical thinking and decision-making.
The School of Nursing’s Baltimore campus has 24 state-of-the-art labs, which are equipped with human patient simulators, and bedside computers, with Internet access; digitalized video; computer assisted instructional software; and other interactive software. The labs are designed to replicate realistic practice settings, including the basic hospital unit, critical care, surgical/operating suite, pediatrics, neonatal nursery, maternity, home care, health assessment and diagnostic laboratory.
Additional CSL’s are located throughout the state of Maryland and are utilized by students attending outreach sites. Each outreach site has at least one health assessment lab for student use as part of undergraduate and graduate assessment courses. In September 2000, the School opened 2 CSL each at the Shady Grove Center and in April of 2005 at the Hagerstown Center. Each of these sites has a multi-focus lab, which is designed to replicate multiple clinical settings in one lab (i.e. basic hospital unit, critical care, pediatrics, maternity, and neonatal unit), in addition to the health assessment lab.
All CSL’s have both scheduled classes and flexible time slots six days a week that are available for students practice and remediation. The lab hours the Shady Grove and Hagerstown centers are posted at each site.
