Applying to the PhD Program

Prospective doctoral students are strongly encouraged to initiate the application process as soon as possible. Applications for the Post-Master’s, with all supporting documents, must be received by February 15th for consideration for the Fall admission.

Applications for BSN-PhD, with have all supporting documents, must be received by November 1st for Spring admission and April 1st for Fall.

Submitting Materials

PhD applicants must submit the following materials, with the exception of the scores of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) which are sent directly to the Graduate School. The review may begin prior to receipt of scores, but the scores must be received before an admission decision can be made.

  1. Submit the application for admission to the University of Maryland, Baltimore Graduate School.
  2. Application fee
  3. Two sets of official transcripts from each college and university attended. If applicant is a diploma school graduate, transcripts of the diploma course work are also required. Transcripts by applicant will be accepted ONLY in officially sealed envelopes.

  1. Professional vitae/resume
  2. A typewritten statement of goals and objectives. This should be concise (not to exceed three pages), well written essay addressing the applicant’s background and reasons for pursuing a doctoral degree. The applicant’s motivation for pursuing graduate study in nursing, career goals and specific research interests should also be addressed.
  3. A photocopy of current licensure for the practice of nursing in at least one state in the U.S. or in a foreign country
  4. Three letters of recommendation from professionals who can assess the applicant’s professional abilities and/or academic potential for doctoral study. Recommendations should include at least one educator with a doctoral degree under whose guidance the applicant has studied.
