Distance Learning

In fall 2000, the University System of Maryland introduced a new concept in advanced education. This was the beginning of the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) (link opens in new window) — a collaboration of eight public degree-granting institutions that bring some of the top academic programs from across the state of Maryland to one convenient facility in Montgomery County.

At the USG you can complete your bachelor's degree or earn a graduate degree from the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Upper-level (junior and senior) baccalaureate, graduate and certificate programs are offere, and USG is ideal for transferring and working students. Part- and full-time programs are offered in the daytime, in the evening and on weekends.

All prospective students, their families and other guests are welcome to visit the USG state-of-the-art education center located in Rockville. Visitors can meet with program staff and representatives, take walking tours of the facility, obtain information, application materials and more. Visitors are welcome to walk-in or call to schedule a personal appointment. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, please call the USG Student Services Office, 301-738-6023, or send e-mail. The Student Services Office is located in Building II, 9630 Gudelsky Drive, Rockville, Md. Student Services Office hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Program Information

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

The undergraduate nursing program is an upper division professional program providing full- and part-time study of professional nursing. The undergraduate program offers two tracks — a basic baccalaureate and a registered nurse baccalaureate completion track.

Graduate Courses

Master's level core courses and courses for selected clinical specialty tracks at the graduate level are offered at the USG, using a cohort model. The graduate admissions counselor from the Baltimore Campus is available, by appointmnet, for on-site advising at Shady Grove.

Learning at the School of Nursing

The ILT Customer Service Center schedules the four distance learning rooms located at the School of Nursing.

Rooms 460, W202, W204, and W208 are available on a daily, monthly or per-semester basis.

There are two unique systems that govern the use and connectivity of these rooms. Room 460, W202 and W208 are part of Interactive Video Network (IVN) that can connect to compatible systems locally, nationally and internationally. W204 is part of the Maryland Interactive Distance Learning Network (MIDLN) that connects to compatible systems locally, including other universities, colleges, public schools (K-12) and selected sites throughout Maryland.

IVN systems use Internet2, and the MIDLN system is a closed system that uses Verizon connections. The ILT Customer Service Center also has an IVN Rover system that can be used in some additional classrooms at the School of Nursing. Contact the ILT Customer Service Center for more details.
