About the Partnership
Recognizing a gap in the funding of nurse education to advance knowledge of breast cancer, the Maryland Affiliate has made a six-year commitment to the University of Maryland School of Nursing to develop a comprehensive and sustainable evidence-based program. With Komen Maryland support, the University of Maryland, School of Nursing will train and educate a cadre of health professionals who are better prepared to screen, treat and manage breast cancer patients. The Komen Maryland Affiliate Nursing Partnership is the first of its kind in the nation linking the Komen Foundation with a School of Nursing.
This funding initiative is intended to model a unique and innovative way for The Komen Foundation to emphasize critically important roles that nurses and often health professionals play in the fight against breast cancer and for the School of Nursing to educate and prepare students, faculty, and practicing nurses who work in the field of breast cancer.
Guiding Principles:
- We believe that the dissemination of breast cancer education can be limitless
- We believe that because nurses are often the first point of contact for health care information in their communities, families, and practices, they—along with other health professionals—must be well-prepared to communicate critical breast cancer information.
- We believe that educating nursing students, practicing nurses, and other health professionals about the current state of breast cancer science is critical for effective prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
