Happy National Nurses Week! We honor the incredible nurses who embody the spirit of compassion and care in every health care setting — you truly make the difference for patients, families, and communities locally, nationally, and globally. Thank you for all you do!

We are pleased to offer a full week of activities and initiatives for all UMSON community members and UMMC nurses, in person, online, and on social media, in celebration of Nurses Week.

Monday, May 6: Nurses Week Kick Off, Spirit Day

Show Your UMSON Spirit! 
Whether it's a T-shirt, hat, pin, or anything else, today we encourage you to sport your UMSON or University of Maryland, Baltimore swag. If you don't have anything with the logo on it, wear the color red (or stop by the swag giveaway in Baltimore starting at 8:30 a.m. or at USG at 1 p.m.)! Take a pic of you, your friends, and/or your colleagues showing off your spirit, and tag us on Instagram or X @marylandnursing.

Cool off from the heat of finals and the end of the semester with Taharka Brothers ice cream in the UMSON courtyard (or lobby, depending on weather). Stop by our selfie station for some smiles! Grab some on-theme swag while supplies last! Word on the street is that a certain famous bird may also make an appearance.

Baltimore: Squeegee Kids: Understanding the Misunderstood Premiere
5:30 - 7:30 p.m., UMSON Auditorium (Room 130)
Learn their stories. Challenge the stereotypes. Join a special screening event with four local nursing schools for the premiere of this documentary, which addresses Baltimore’s squeegee community. Engage in a lively Q&A with squeegee community members, director Matthew J. Cooper, and student panelists. Snacks provided. Learn more and register.

Wednesday, May 8: Student Nurse Day

Join the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and the Office of Student Affairs and Services to recognize Mental Health Month in May with a refreshing beverage and snack while learning about mental health tips and available resources on campus.

Baltimore and Virtual: Teaching Grand Rounds
noon - 1 p.m., UMSON Room 430 and Online

UMSON’s Institute for Educators kicks off its Teaching Grand Rounds (TGR), with free continuing nursing professional development contact hours for attendees, thanks to the UMSON’s Office of Professional Education. These monthly sessions will feature faculty and staff colleagues presenting on topics of interest, from rubric creation to innovative teaching practices to working with AI, for example.

Thursday, May 9: Thank a Nurse Day

Take time today to thank the nurses who have made a difference in your life. It's easy:

Virtual: Lunch and Learn: Strategies for Faculty and Staff to Promote Student Well-being

Did you know almost 60% of college students experience symptoms of a mental health disorder? May is mental health awareness month. Faculty and staff are invited to learn about nursing student mental health and well-being. Participants will leave with practical strategies for improving student mental health and well-being in the classroom and beyond. Learn more.
