The School of Nursing and Dell are offering a Latitude laptop computer at a discounted price. The Latitude computers that are offered to nursing students include the following:
Go to the special DN-Dell/SON Student Computing Store and click on the “Shop Now” button to configure and purchase the laptop. You will also have the option to purchase a variety of accessories for the laptop. You will need your myUMid number to place an order.
While waiting for your laptop to be delivered, you should purchase Symantec Antivirus and Microsoft Office software. These two software packages are available from the University of Maryland at a significant discount. To purchase Symantec Antivirus and Microsoft Office software, you must visit the front desk at the University of Maryland HS/HSL Library at 601 West Lombard Street. You will need to bring your myUMid with you. Payment can be made by cash, personal check or credit card. You will also need to sign a software license agreement. If you are a distance-learning student that does not come on campus, you can purchase the software by mail. Additional details about the discounted software can be found on the CITS website.
When you power on your laptop for the first time, you will be prompted to complete the setup of Windows 7 Professional and to create a user name. This user will have administrative rights on the PC.
To ensure extra security, you should also create a “limited” user account for yourself using the "User Accounts" icon in the Control Panel. This new account should be created as a "Limited" account type.
If you log on using a limited account for normal daily use, you will help prevent potentially harmful applications (spyware, malware, etc.) from being installed on your laptop. You can log on with the administrative account whenever you need to install Microsoft operating system updates or security updates, new applications, etc.
At this time, you should also change the password of the administrative account. By default, it has no password. This new password should be written down and stored in a safe place that you will easily remember when you need to use it.
Next, you should install the Symantec Antivirus and Microsoft Office software. Guidelines on how to install these two software packages on your new Dell laptop are available on the School of Nursing website.
Discounted software is also available for students that do not purchase the laptop through the School of Nursing Student Laptop Program or that already have a computer. This software is available at the circulation counter of the HS/HSL. Details about the discounted software can be found on the CITS website.
The School of Nursing IT department is unable to provide support for computers not purchased through the School of Nursing Student Laptop Program. The IT department is also unable to provide support for computers that have antivirus or office software installed on them other than the recommended Symantec Antivirus and Microsoft Office software available from the HS/HSL.
