The Media's Controversial Portrayal of Nursing and Its Negative Impact on the Profession

The Edmunds Lecture presented by

Sandy Summers, RN, MSN, MPH

Executive Director and co-founder of the Center for Nursing Advocacy

The media rarely represents the true nature of nursing work and even less frequently depicts the broad base of knowledge and skill required to be a nurse. This discourages bright and talented people from entering the profession, legitimizes the dilution of nursing care delivery with under-educated technicians, and affects the chronic lack of funding for nursing education and nurse-led research. These are all factors in the nursing shortage that is taking lives worldwide. We encourage all nurses and nursing students to join us for this provocative lecture to explore the issues and learn how nurses can work together to move the image of nursing toward a profession that's second to none.
