The Ann Ottney Cain Lecture in Psychiatric Nursing was established by students, faculty, alumni, and friends to honor Ann Cain, PhD, RN, FAAN, upon her retirement in 1994 from the University of Maryland School of Nursing.  Their contributions allowed the School of Nursing to create an endowment to support this lecture.

Ann CainDr. Cain served as Associate Dean from 1991-1994 and taught in both graduate and undergraduate programs in her 30 years at the school.  She became a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 1978.  A member of Sigma Theta Tau National Nursing Honor Society since 1956, Dr. Cain received both the Society’s International Recognition Award for Excellence in Nursing and the University of Maryland’s Pi Chapter Excellence in Nursing Award in 1991.

Dr. Cain has been described as a “maverick” in her specialty of family therapy.  She has demonstrated great leadership in Psychiatric Nursing and credits her success to working with excellent students, faculty and staff.
