Mental Health Policy Institute for Leadership and Training and the University of Maryland School of Nursing present
Treating the Forgotten Youth: Juvenile Sex Offenders National Conference and Certificate Training Program
Conference: September 12 and 13, 2006
Professionals who work in the areas of juvenile justice, child welfare, mental health or education, at the level of direct-care staff, clinician, administrator or policy-maker, will find this two-day conference relevant and informative. The conference will provide an overview of topics relevant to treating juvenile sex offenders or children with inappropriate sexual behavior in the community. Recent research supports community treatment because the majority of these children and adolescents will not exhibit recidivist sexual behavior and treatment in the community can be effective, safe and preferable in many cases. Many of these youth will also have diagnosable mental illnesses including depression, anxiety, PTSD and adjustment disorders that contribute to their behaviors and need to be diagnosed and treated along with the sexual issues.
This conference will explore the research underlying the field including descriptions of the varying populations, options for comprehensive and flexible treatment, the intersection with mental health and other social service systems as well as possible funding mechanisms for these treatment approaches. Participants will also hear about unique models of service that are oriented towards prevention and that are adapted to working with youth that are non-adjudicated as well as the more prevalent post-adjudication model. All of this information will be presented within a framework of values that reflect a commitment to consumer oriented, recovery based treatment that recognizes the unique needs of each youth and their family.
At the end of the conference, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of the field and current research and will be able to effectively participate in building for the future reduction of juvenile sex offenders.
