Please join us for a unique educational experience offered by the University of Maryland School of Nursing Institute for Educators in Nursing and Health Professions. Keynote speaker, Dr. Lynne Young, an international expert on student-centered learning, will challenge and inspire us to rethink our faculty role and our approach to teaching. Dr. Young will facilitate a stimulating discussion about best practices, challenges, and models to consider as we shift to less traditional instructional methods. Following the keynote presentation, a panel of experts will share their collective experiences with student-centered learning and suggest ideas for operationalizing a variety of approaches.

About the Speaker

Marilyn OermannLynne Young, BSN, MSN, PhD

Dr. Lynne Young is an Associate Professor and Associate Director, Scholarship & Research at the University of Victoria, School of Nursing located at the Lower Mainland Campus having joined the faculty in 1997. Dr. Young’s research interests are in family health promotion, primarily in the context of cardiovascular care. During her Post-Doctoral studies at the University of Washington School of Nursing, Bio-behavioral and Nursing Health Systems Department, Dr Young and her supervisor Dr. Susanna Cunningham designed a research program that used a multi-method, participatory approach to explore mothers’ behavioral, clinical, and social risks for cardiovascular disease. In addition to completing this research, Dr. Young is completing a study exploring the interface between families, health, and heart transplantation, and a study evaluating the effectiveness of telehealth technology in supporting families following a child ‘s back surgery. Dr Young is a key mentor in the FUTURES program, a CIHR training program funded to train cardiovascular nurse scientists.

In addition to her research, Dr. Young is a co-editor of two books. The first book (co-edited with V. Hayes) addresses nursing practice and is entitled: “Transforming health promotion practice: Concepts, Issues, and Applications”. This book was awarded the American Journal of Nursing 2002 Book of the Year Award in two categories, Community/Public Health and Mental/Psychiatric Nursing. The book is currently being translated into Japanese. The second book (co-edited with B. Paterson) addresses nursing education such that this professional practice is located within the same philosophical view of nursing as the first book. The second book is entitled: "Teaching nursing: Developing a student-centered learning environment". As well, Dr. Young is currently involved with a national nursing group much concerned with moving forward the agenda of pain management in Canada. Dr. Young has served on several committees for graduate students.
