Excellence in Teaching Awards

Undergraduate Education

Purpose: The purpose of the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) Excellence in Teaching Award is to recognize excellence in the area of teaching at UMSON.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Full-time UMSON faculty member
  • Experienced faculty member who has been teaching one year or more in the faculty role
  • Faculty member teaching at the BSN level

Award Criteria:

  • Leads in the promotion and implementation of innovation in teaching/learning approaches in nursing education
  • Demonstrates excellence and innovation in teaching/learning approaches
  • Promotes diversity and culture of inclusion

Nomination Process:

The eligible faculty member must be nominated by a student for the award. The nomination packet consists of the following components:

  1. Nominating letter from a student (must be written within six months of the due date)
  2. Letter of support from a peer faculty member (must be written within six months of the due date)
  3. Nominee curriculum vitae

It is recommended that letters address the award criteria and provide evidence or examples of meeting the criteria. All letters must be no longer than two pages in length. All nomination packets must be submitted to the Student Affairs chair by April 1 of each year.

Selection Committee:

Five student volunteers will be recruited from the BSN student body on both campuses to review the applications and select an awardee.

Presentation of Awards:

Award winners will be announced at the end of the spring semester:

  • Winners will receive an engraved award.
  • Winners will be spotlighted in UMSON magazine and electronic publications.

Standing Committee Responsible for Oversight:

Student Affairs with assistance from Office of Student and Academic Services

Graduate Education

Purpose: The purpose of the UMSON Excellence in Teaching Award is to recognize excellence in the area of teaching at the School of Nursing.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Full-time UMSON faculty member
  • Experienced faculty member who has been teaching one year or more in the faculty role
  • Faculty member teaching at the graduate level (master’s, post-master’s, certificates, DNP or PhD program)

Award Criteria:

  • Leads in the promotion and implementation of innovation in teaching/learning approaches in nursing education
  • Demonstrates excellence and innovation in teaching/learning approaches
  • Promotes diversity and culture of inclusion
