Humor: A Gift to Nursing

 presented by

Anne BelcherAnne Belcher, PhD, RN, AOCN, CNE, FAAN
Associate Professor
Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing

Often overlooked, humor is a valuable tool nurses can use to promote health in themselves and their colleagues, patients, and families. Increasing evidence demonstrates the impact of humor on physiological, psychological, and spiritual aspects of a nurse’s work. During the lecture, humor will be defined and examples of its value for holistic health will be shared.

About the Speaker

Dr. Anne Belcher is now approaching 45 years as a nurse educator. At the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, she teaches that nursing is about far more than treating illness. She urges students to grasp the heart of what nursing is about: the whole person. Her holistic approach to care spans the health-illness continuum from health promotion and risk reduction to disease management and, ultimately, death with dignity. Dr. Belcher brings to her clinical work with oncology patients an extensive background in oncology nursing. Her research has yielded a prolific number of scholarly publications and grant awards that raise the appreciation and understanding of the ways in which belief and attitude affect physical health and illness. Dr. Belcher also explores and promotes throughout the nursing curriculum and in her lectures to students and faculty the use of complementary and alternative therapies—including massage, laughter, meditation, and acupuncture—as part of a nurse's clinical armamentarium to serve the whole patient.
