Eligibility and Application


Applicants are registered nurses with:

  • graduate education preparation
  • an active Maryland nursing license

Employed by either:

  • a Maryland school of nursing
  • a Maryland health care service agency/practice

Able to:

  • demonstrate leadership potential through your work and professional activities
  • provide documented support from your institution to participate in all NLI activities
  • provide documented commitment from a nurse mentor


Applicants are required to have institutional support for their participation in this program and identify a mentor, preferably from their institution, who agrees to participate in the one-year program including attending sessions designed for mentors.

Important Dates 2017

March 21 Call for applications opens
June 5 Application submission deadline
June 28 Applicants notified of decision
July 12 Confirm acceptance
Sept. 1 Official start of program

Completed applications received by the posted deadline will be reviewed by a committee comprised of academic and practice leaders. All applicants will receive notification of the committee’s decision. Selected are required to confirm their participation no later than July 12, 2017.

Application Materials

All applicants must submit the following:

  • NLI Applicant Information Form
  • completed and signed NLI Institutional Support Form
  • two-page personal narrative, including:
    • career path and accomplishments to date
    • commitment to attend and participate in all activities
    • goals, including competencies
    • professional goals for the future
  • professional vitae
  • job description for your current position
  • copy of your active nursing license
  • mentor’s letter of agreement and professional vitae, including:
    • a brief description of the mentor’s career and accomplishments
    • a commitment to support the nominee through the yearlong program
    • a commitment to attend mentor designated activities
