Learn an integrated approach to addressing the needs of body, mind, soul, and spirit in this certificate program designed for nurses who are already prepared at the doctoral level in another specialty.

This program educates doctorally prepared (DNP or PhD) nurses to:

  • take the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (across the lifespan) certification exam
  • meet the growing demand for qualified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners
  • educate nursing students across all education levels in psychiatric mental health nursing.

You’ll learn an evidence-based holistic approach to treat mental health problems in adults and children, involving:

  • diagnostic skills
  • medication management
  • individual, family, and group therapy techniques.

Upon receiving your certificate, you’ll be prepared to work in private practices, outpatient clinics, in urgent care settings, and as a hospital liaison.

The University of Maryland School of Nursing has had a distinguished psychiatric nursing program for 60 years and provides customized clinical placements and mentoring for doctorally prepared students.
